GARDENING – STRAWBERRIES

ACTIVE AT SIXTY

THE A-Z CHALLENGE

Another year with the A-Z Challenge. This year I am doing Active at Sixty: The A-Z Challenge.

Stop being a couch potato. Get out and learn something new!

Strawberries…. One of my favorite fruits.

I have a small backyard behind my home. There is room for a workshop for the mower and a few tools. When family was around, the yard was manicured for a croquet court. Of course, the protruding roots of the two maples were often obstacles to a good game, but we loved it. Now, its most-factor is a ill-used horseshoe pit.

With many fewer distractions and much more time on my hands I have decided to develop a passion for gardening. I have a few flowers that a special to my heart: hydrangeas and peonies from the yards of my grandparents, irises and roses from my mother, tulips, daffodils, and daylilies from my father.

My father had a green thumb with all kinds of gardening. He particularly was blessed with growing potatoes and corn. I hope that I have acquired a few of his genes and that I will become a successful gardener of a small strawberry plantation.

This year I am starting with twenty-one strawberry plants.

How to Grow Strawberries.

They are presently awaiting in my kitchen for Mother Nature to stop her topsy-turvy cursing of weather fluctuations and allow me to feel good about planting them outside.

If you have a love for fruit, I strongly suggest strawberries as a starter plant for you.

  • They seem to be perennials (come back every year).
  • They are self-pollinating.
  • They are self-propagating.
  • Minor soil fertilization is necessary once you get started.
  • The video tells MANY, MANY needed details. (But I am square-foot gardening, so some of the video I disregarded.)
  • You eat them as you pick them or await some angel food cake and whipped cream toppings.

I hope you will thank about a planting endeavour to add to your fulfilling life. It is a grand way to enjoy a little  exercise and some sunshine at the same time.

The Sport: JIGSAW PUZZLES

The Season: Any rainy evening

The Rules: Open the box. Use the front cover as a guide. I usually put the frame together first and then the large objects in the puzzle. If there are unusual blocks of color, I often put those together as well.

The Thrill: A new puzzle- even an old puzzle- with great friends and conversation… Nothing better for a rainy night. This is especially fun to do by lantern light if the electricity fails!

Full Disclosure: Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun! ‘Nough said!

The Sport: HORSESHOES

The Season: Spring/ Summer/ Fall

The Rules: Click Here

The Thrill: Thrill One- Throwing a ringer! Thrill Two- Topping and opponent’s ringer!

Full Disclosure: I LOVE THIS SPORT. There are many games that I will be a great sport and allow for competition when I am playing a weaker player. In fact, in most sports, this would be true. Not true in horseshoes. Attempting a ‘bad throw’ can really sidetrack your game. If you can’t stand the heat…. Watch!

My challenge for this year… I am planning to complete the A-Z Challenge this year by sharing an activity in which I still enjoy competing.

The Season: An All- Season Sport

The Rules: There are many sites that offered a fantasy game for their sports. Feel free to google!

The Thrill: Thrill One- This is a great way to stay up-to-date with the up-and-comers in a sport! Thrill Two- Trashmouth… This is always a plus. (OK, don’t tell the kids that?)

Full Disclosure: Anytime I have a group of three or more friends that all enjoy the same sport, we play fantasy sports. I have played football, soccer, baseball, basketball, and NASCAR racing. I do not play in the leagues for money; I play for the glory (i.e. trashmouthing)

The Sport: Eight-Ball Billiards

The Season: An All-Season Sport (but I prefer the winter!)

The Rules: Click Here

The Thrill: I stink at this game. It has no thrills. It does not seem to matter if I practice or not- the results are the same. In truth, most days, I would rather play cards. Is that not a sad fact!!!

Full Disclosure: I have never been to a place that had regulation billiard tables in good condition in order to practice enough to accomplish any kind of proficiency at this game. It is fun to play for a while if a person has to wait on a bowling lane to open.

The Season: An All- Season Sport

The Thrill: Need you ask… BULL’s EYE! There is an additional skill thrill- I love to play Follow the Leader with the darts. The leader calls a number and hits… The next in line has to hit the same number. To make it more interesting, we always play for something… usually Peanut M&Ms.

Full Disclosure: When playing this game in the yard… be sure to have an adequate way of keeping track of ‘lost’ darts. They are awfully hard to find in the grasses!!! (From experience!)

CROQUET: Sports for the over 50+ Crowd

 The 2016 A-Z Blogging Challenge

My challenge for this year… I am planning to complete the A-Z Challenge this year by sharing an activity in which I still enjoy competing.

The Sport: CROQUET (This is an outside sport.)

The Season: Spring/ Summer/ Fall

The Rules: Click Here

The Thrill: Thrill One- I love to play the version of CROQUET that is called Black Snake. Once the competitor completes the course, he can then go kill all the other competitors. (You might be catching a theme in my competitiveness. This is true. But once the sport is over, I am OK with going out for a meal with my former enemy!) Thrill Two- If you are able to hit another competitor’s ball, you can get two additional shots.

Full Disclosure: The ‘breaking’ of lawn ornaments and losing croquet balls inside of holes under patios can be a problem. You might want to make certain areas ‘out-of-bounds’ for play so that your lawn and the game will run more smoothly.

BADMINTON: Sports for the over 50+ Crowd

The 2016 A-Z Blogging Challenge

My challenge for this year… I am planning to complete the A-Z Challenge this year by sharing an activity in which I still enjoy competing.

The Sport: BADMINTON (This is an outside sport.)

The Season: Spring/ Summer/ Fall

The Rules: Click Here

The Thrill: Thrill One: The best thrill would have to be the over-the-head-slam right at the opposing player’s hands, thus crippling his swing so that it ineffective, (Spoiler to those who find competition wrong- this does NOT cripple the opponent…It only cripples his ability to swing at the birdie.) Thrill Two: A well placed return for a diving save or a corner shot.

Full Disclosure: Your knees will feel the wear and tear of this sport. It is not a contact sport with the opponent, but likely if you are a passionate player… you will come in contact with the ground. Note to Cleaners- Grass stains are inevitable!
