The Evening and the Morning
Ken Follett
This is a Prequel to The Pillars of the Earth (1989).
Edgar, the youngest (and the smartest) of three sons to a renowned boat builder falls in love. The problem- the young girl is married. They decide to run away and begin life in a village far away. Edgar is a superb boat builder himself. This should rather easy to do. (Disappearing is relatively easy in the Dark Ages- 9997 CE.)
The night of the planned escape, Vikings raid the villages and they kill Edgar’s one true love.
Edgar and his family (his mother and two older brothers) move to a small hamlet and try to resurrect a useless farm.
By chance, Edgar meets a noblewoman, newly married, the wife of the ruler of the surrounding lands. He is smitten. He vows to never fall in love again, but this woman has taken his eye.
Murder, treason, a new birth, flooding, illicit relationships of ‘devote’ Church leaders… all twist and turn to make this a great storyline.
I have not read the original trilogy, but I plan to do so!
A GREAT read.
