What kind of beard should the male characters in my novel sport? Or should they be clean-shaven?

What assumptions does a person make about a character because of their facial hair? Or is the world nonjudgmental about shaving?

FYI: Today, I found out, I sport a Chevron. I didn’t know that… it seemed that was what my face desired when I stopped shaving under my nose?

I wonder what that means?

Written for FANDANGO’S ONE WORD CHALLENGE: BEARD.   I have been having problems finding something of meaning to create an answer for the prompts this year. So I decided to strengthen and tighten my focus.
