How to Fight the Tide?

How to Fight the Tide?

If you Google How to get in a writing habit? you will find many answers.

  • So, You Want to Write
  • And many others!

For me, I am still being successful some day at finding time to write… and then being unsuccessful for three or four days in a row… then finding four days off with nothing- no inspiration whatsoever…

So far, for me, nothing has worked.

Today, I as approached this tops, I found a shorter answer…

Three Steps to Start a Daily Writing Habit

The three steps, I appropriated from Jeff Goins, I have clarified with what they mean to me. (Thanks, Jeff. I think think your blog was awesome!)

  1. Pick a space.

Make it yours.

This is where “it” happens.

For me, I think that means it is clutter free.

It has a place for a drink.

It is large enough for a book (or two) of supplemental materials.

It probably needs a plant. I like plants.

For me, it probably needs a knick-knack reminder. I like memories.

2. Set a time.

This is where I fall short. I will not allow myself to set-apart time.

Whatever it is… IT IS!

I am here.

Butt in chair.

3. Choose a goal.

This one is the one that settled it for me.

I saw stars. cc-star_800600cc-star_800600cc-star_800600cc-star_800600cc-star_800600

I work well for check-marks.

So what is my goal?

300 words.

I will start a new writing sheet and write 3000 new words each and every day.

If they are the continuation of another writing excerpt, I will attach them after I complete the 3000 words.

4. Reward

I added this one!

If the stars (or check-marks) don’t win anything…. I don’t play!!!

I pick ice cream!

Every FOUR days – in a row- I complete the goals…

I get ice cream

Well, so far today I have written 500 words!

I’ll let you know next week how it is going!!!

Written for The Daily Post: Tide.  I have been having problems finding something of meaning to create an answer for the prompts this year. So I decided to strengthen and tighten my focus. My chosen topics are as follows:  (Monday) Life in Retirement; (Tuesday) Hobbies: Archaeology and Astronomy; (Wednesday) Fitness; (Thursday) Chores; (Friday) Writing; (Saturday) Hobbies: Music and Photography; and (Sunday) Hobbies: Gardening and Birdwatching.
