I have to control myself from bursting out in laughter as I hear colleagues and pundits compare computer-teaching (buying an online- much acclaimed five-star program) in a classroom setting to an experienced, passionate teacher in a classroom with the same 30+ children.

There is NO COMPARISON!

I have taken online classes… and there are a few that I have actually enjoyed.

But to expect a computer to teach our children the knowledge needed to be acquired and developed and to then master the social skill sets that they need to advance themselves in the world… ABSURD!

A skilled and passionate teacher assisting willing (and often not-so-willing) learners will win this contest hands down every single time!

Can computers be used to assist instruction? I will give that a full-hearted YES!!!

Can a computer replace the personal touch?  None have been built so far that can come close.

(You can now hear applause from the learned as I slowly and confidently step down from behind the podium.)

  • What is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person?

What is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person?

There are so many places and things I have not seen. My most incredible venue, that I have experienced personally, would have to be a beautiful sunset, an autumn-leafed mountain from an overlook, or a roaring campfire under the stars.

How many siblings do you have? What’s your birth order?

My folks assisted in raising many kids. I am their oldest spawn. There are many older and many younger.

If you were a shoe, what kind would you be and why?

Definitely not a dress shoe. Possibly a tennis shoe. Life as a sandal would not be bad.

But I am a lover of going barefoot!

Nothing better than walking through the freshly mowed grass without shoes!

What is the strangest/weirdest thing you have ever eaten?

  • Escamoles- ant eggs from a venomous ant (Mexico)
  • Shirako- sperm sacs from cod, angler fish, or puffer fish (Japan)
  • Tuna Eyes- eyes from a tuna (Japan)
  • Balut- fertilized duck eggs (Philippines)
  • Tarantulas- crispy when fried (Cambodia)
  • Gaeng Kai Mot Daeng- white ant soup (Laos)
  • Jellied Moose Nose- boiled with onions and spices (Canada)
  • Boshintang- a soup of onions, dandelions, spices and dog (Korea)
  • Huitlacoche- corn kernels covered with a fungus (Mexico)
  • Airag- moose milk fermented (Mongolia)
  • Casu marzu- a cheese complete with cheese flies (Italy)
  • Muktuk- frozen whale skin and blubber (Greenland)
  • Hakarl- shark jerky (Iceland)
  • Century Egg- eggs covered in clay, ash, and salt for months and then eaten (China)
  • Salo- smoked slices of fat on rye bread (Ukraine)
  • Stargazey Pie- a pie complete with several fish as a filling (England)
  • Locusts- just like is says (Isreal)

Nope! I have not tried any of these delectables.

But then, I am not an adventurous eater. I have not eaten these foods either.

  • Snails
  • Oysters
  • Crabs
  • Lobster
  • Eggplant
  • Artichoke
  • Chickpeas
  • Okra
  • Turnips

But I have had…

  • Rabbit Stew
  • Barbecued Squirrel
  • Groundhog Pot Pie

The Drop

“They have found an empty boat.” Officer Sanchez was slowly repeating the message. “Yes, VA-3417-KZ. Thanks.” He slowly placed the receiver back in the cradle. Joan Bisquene’s look said it all.

“There was nothing on the boat?” in a whisper of desperation.

“As far as I know, they have found nothing.”

“That’s got to be a good sign. No blood. No one was hurt.”

“What do you mean?” New thoughts were entering the sergeant’s mind. “You were reporting them missing. What makes you suddenly think that foul play?”

“There is more to the story.” Her face suddenly consumed in guilt. “Frank, my husband, was to make a delivery- I guess you would call it a drop- last night. In return, we were to get our youngest son returned.”

“Your youngest … kidnapped?” Sargent Sanchez found it difficult to restrain his voice. “Don’t you think that would have assisted us in the search?”

“I just couldn’t take any chances. They said if we told anyone about the kidnapping…”

“Then why did you come here?”

“Frank’s law partners reported him missing. I thought it would be easier to explain if I just came in and reported a late fishing exhibition.”

Suddenly, ‘Beethoven’s Fifth’ came bursting from her purse. “Frank!”

“Ms. Bisquenue, you were warned. Why are you at the police station?

Joan fainted.

Do you prefer juice or fruit?

Fruit!

Did you grow up in a small or big town? Did you like it?

I grew-up on a small cattle farm. Lots of corn and hay. Lots of cats and a few dogs. It Was Awesome!

If you were to paint a picture of your childhood, what colors would you use?

ORANGE! My favorite shirt from sixth grade to eighth grade was a nylon-type tight-fitting sailor shirt. It was bright orange with a shoe-string lace ties for the open-chest look. I was quite the stud! (I am so glad there are no pictures of this fashion statement????)

Ways to Relax List: Make a list of what relaxes you and helps you feel calm.

Classical music and a candlelight meal!

  • Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?
  • What is your usual bedtime?
  • Do you like to use post-it notes?
  • When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
  • Any phobias?
  • How tall are you?

Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?

I sleep with the closet doors open some of the time and closed some of the time…

When I was younger, my room did not have a closet. I had an old wardrobe. I kept those doors closed. I don’t think it was because of monsters or anything like that. I had a very small room and if the doors were open, you could not get around in the room very easily.

Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?

Nope.

What is your usual bedtime?

I try religiously to get 8 hours of sleep a night. Sometimes, if there is a basketball game at 9 pm in the evening, I have to get the sleep in two shifts. If there is a tennis match in the wee hours, I have to go to bed VERY early for a 3:30 am morning television viewing from Australia. (GO NADAL!)

Do you like to use post-it notes?

Nope.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?

We did written letters for Christmas this year in my classroom. We even created our own envelopes and used the sealing wax.

Any phobias?

SPIDERS… Even dead spiders are not appreciated!

How tall are you?

Not as tall as I once was?

Thanks for Your Patience

During the last two months (plus) my internet presence and participation has been very sporadic. I have not answered as many friends’ likes, responded to as many prompts, or even participated fully in my own flash challenge blog.

We have had a family upheaval with illnesses followed by the passing of my dad.

I think that as of this week, I will be able to participate once again and become a full member of the writing communities.  I value greatly the chances to write for the many unique contests and I cherish dearly the correspondence and encouragement from fellow writers.

Thank you all for your kindness and understanding.
