THE RESCUE




“He has to be somewhere around here. That’s his bike.”

“What was he doing here?”

“A message. Said if he really wanted to know what happened to his two pups, be here at noon.”

“Five hours ago! Walter never should have come here alone.”

“You know how stubborn he is.”

“Did he think that he was going to get’em back? Did the message ask for money?”

“Don’t know? Walter just said that the note was about his dogs. Left before I could stop him.”

“Couldn’t you have…”

“Gone with him? Then both of us would be missing.”

“No,… … told me sooner?”

“I promised.”

“Not all promises are meant to be kept.”

Hearing a whimpering, they turned and saw Walter clutching a Boxer pup in each elbow. His face was bloodied and one of his eyes was swollen shut.

“What on earth happened?”

“Wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
