The Beautiful Desert
“I told you to turn right at that last junction. Now, where are we?”
“I know where we’re going.”
“For the last eight miles there has been nothing but cacti, scorpions, and buzzards.”
“The cacti… they are beautiful!”
“I know you invited me on a shot with your new camera, but getting lost in the desert is not my idea of a great first date anniversary.”
“Why did you buy me my two new lenses, if you did not want me to use them?”
“I want you enjoy yourself, honey. I just thought that tonight… we might be by ourselves.”
“We are by ourselves.”
“This is not what I had in mind.”
“In just another hour, you will have never seen the stars like you can see them on a clear desert night.”
“I suppose you remember, once the sun goes down… so does the temperature in this lovely desert of yours.”
“I have a plan.
“We are following one of your plans.”
“Oh, yes. Tonight will be a night you will not quickly forget.”

It is true you can really see the stars in the desert. Sounds like his girlfriend is not the outdoorsy type. Too bad.

Thanks for the read! I do think that she had other plans?

LOL! I don’t think he is convincing her. Maybe they have different ideas of what romantic is. Haha! (There are some typos in the 6th, 7th, and 10th paragraphs). Great story Roger. 🙂

I enjoyed the back and forth between the two. The last line sounds somewhat ominous, I wonder what’s in store apart from stars… Nicely done!

It could go either way?

I love the way the dialogue tells the whole story.

Romance under the stars sounds very appealing, but the night won’t end well if she’s too worried or freezing (or killed — hey, that last line could mean anything!). I like the contrast between your two characters and the build up; and I want to know what happens next!

I think he has the most romantic evening planned and she will be thoroughly enchanted with him. She’s unaware of the champagne chilling in the trunk, next to the strawberries, chocolate and portable heater…ooo la la 🙂

I don’t know the outcome of the night, but I’ll vote for Deb’s idea! 🙂 Wonderful story…an untold ending and plenty of room to put your imagination to work!
