Louis L’Amore: One of America’s Best

“One day I was speeding along at the typewriter, and my daughter – who was a child at the time – asked me, “Daddy, why are you writing so fast?” And I replied, “Because I want to see how the story turns out!”

. . . Louis L’Amour

As a lad, I enjoyed the stories of Louis L’Amore. I loved the adventures, the dangers of the West, the gunfights, the wining of girl….

As a more mature lad, I love L’Amore for his writing style and uttermost honesty. (I still love the gunfights and winning the girl!)

If you have not ever read a L’Amore book… you need to do so! I would highly recommend his Saga of the Sachetts. Great reads. Below are some nib-bits of interest in some of his stand-alone novels.

Tucker

A young man can never seem to grow up as fast as he wants to do so in life. That was the problem with Tucker… That, and his choice of friends. When his father finds himself stranded in the wilderness with a broken leg, and all the communities funds have been stolen that were in his care, Tucker gets to rise to the challenge of being a man far faster than he had ever dreamed.

Guns of the Timberlands

Clay Bell, a man who has been successful at a variety of jobs in the West, finally settles in the Tinkersville. He has the yearnings to make a home for himself. He lays claim to his paradise: a small mountain top and valley complete with fresh-water springs.

Progress interrupts his plans with the arrival of Jud Devitt, a renegade, entrepreneur logger, and his self-appointed judge (on payroll) and the judge’s daughter.

As the clash unfolds, the entire town of Tinkersville finds itself caught in the crosshairs of an all-out range war.

Rider of Lost Creek

Lance Kilkneeey rides to Live Oak to pay a debt to a former friend, Mort Davis. Davis, a small cattle farmer, has found himself involved in a range war with two of the largest ranches in the West. After careful investigations, there seems to be a fourth party, unbeknown to all, instigating the conflicts.

Lance, a law-abiding gunslinger, finds himself in the middle of a gruella warfare triangle of good citizens seeking to annihilate each other’s ranches all because of the strings being pulled by this unknown puppeteer.

If you enjoy Westerns…. You will enjoy these.

Saga of the Sacketts gets a FIVE STAR rating.
