The Further Adventures of Tom and Huck

“Huck, ready to launch?”

“Ready, Tom.”

Nightly readings from the classics had caused the twins to be enthralled by the call of the river. At seven, they had tried to make a raft from refrigerated-cardboard, epoxied to empty Clorox bottles. The raft took their animals down some rapids of Rappahannock never to be seen again.  At ten, a ply board-stripped raft lashed to hacheted branches was not buoyant enough to keep one brother afloat- much less both.

By twelve, the pretenders had earned enough to have purchased a real raft- howbeit, an inflatable.

“Bon Voyage!” their nervous mother yelled.

Written for The Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge ( a late entry!)

Requirements: CARROT RANCH: May 27, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story, using the above photo as a prompt. You can make it a garden party or an international spy thriller. Who is there and why? Does the backdrop scenery make an impact or is it ignored? The place is on an island, if you wish to make use of that. Go where the photograph leads you this week.

  1. Great names for twin boys! I like how they are striving to live up to their names, year after year. It’s a great take on the prompt and I’m glad to see it having longevity beyond its one week. Thank you!
