Preparing the Garden for Mother

The A-Z Blogging Challenge: 2015

“Dig a hole about four inches deep. Make a fist, Margaret. When you can plant your fist you are deep enough.”

“These were Mommy’s favorites last year. She said as each one bloomed a message was delivered to the heavens. I really like the boy flowers- the purple ones with the beards.”

“I know. That’s why I’m letting you plant the purples. I’ll plant the white ones.”

“Great idea Dad. They looked like you. They were as white as your hair last summer.”

“Funny Kiddo. Make your hole about as round as a basketball. That’s good.”

“Now, I need to put a little mound in the center to set my flower rizzome.  I saw Mommy do that last year.”

“That’s right, Margaret, except irises bulbs area actually called a rhizomes. Carefully separate and spread its little roots down that mound and cover it up. Leave the very top of the rhizome exposed. It likes the sunlight.”

“How’s that?”

“Beautiful, dear. You did a great job.”

“Will Mommy be home in time to see the irises bloom this year?”

“We hope so, sweetie. That’s why we’re getting the garden ready… Just like she would have. You can tell her about our plantings on our next visit.”

“When is that?”

“The doctor at the sanatorium said that we could visit every weekend,”

“I think Mommy’s getting better.”

“I think so too, Marrgy.”

“She will love sitting out here in her flowerbed this coming spring.”

“We all will enjoy having Mommy home, Margaret.”
