FEELING FANCY

DAILY PROMPT: You’re given unlimited funds to plan one day full of any and all luxuries you normally can’t afford. Tell us about your extravagant day with as much detail as possible.

At first reflection, I thought this would be easy! Then, memories intruded and age reared its ugly head. Therefore I will have to answer the prompt in three ways.

As a boy of ten… me and the dog … the day would be spent riding my dirt bike through wide open fields, jumping over ground hog holes, and playing with my beagle (Lady). The night would be camping with the neighbors, roasting hot dogs with smores, and staying up until dawn telling stories.

As a rowdy, never-tiring teen… my close-knit group of friends … The day would be spent with knock-out games on the basketball court, round-robin doubles tournaments on the tennis courts, and quick dips in the pool! The night would be camping and well-seasoned cheeseburgers on a grill, potato salad and spring-chilled cold drinks… dueling guitars, harmonicas, and classic songs… ending with plenty of two-by-two star-gazing with that special one (even on the cloudiest of nights).

At sixty… an all-nighter with a great book to read… a steak supper complemented by French Fries and an ice-cold Mountain Dew followed by an over-time DUKE Blue Devil basketball game… a history-laden day-trip with one close friend to bask in times gone by… just a stay-at-home day to call friends and family, play with the dog, and write….

Each of those “guys” – the boy of ten, the rowdy, never-tiring teen, and the ancient one- are still a strong part of who I am … … …But for the true me… FANCY as never been very fancy… intimate friends, simple doings, and a chance to share love … Those are the days I cherish. Those are my fancy days. Those are the days that are best.
